Edmonton “Snack-Size” Public Library

AE 225 Environmental Design Studio

November 2023 – December 2023

Created with Jasmine Singh

This project was our final project for AE 225. It focused on the design of a small, 10x18m library in Edmonton, Alberta through the consideration of energy conservation, solar energy generation, daylighting, and climate-responsive strategies. This was the accumulation of the previous two projects from this Studio class.

Sun and wind were heavily studied for this building design. As Edmonton is a Zone 7, very cold, climate zone, we wanted to make use of solar heat gain as much as possible. As such, thermal masses like exposed concrete floors and rammed earth walls were used. Some consideration was made for ventilation during the warmer summer weeks.

Accessories such as solar shelves and PV panels were implemented for reduced glare and energy generation, respectively. A hybrid electric heat pump and gas furnace was used, switching depending on external climate conditions for optimal efficiency.
