Cambridge Carnegie Library Revitalization

Warrior Home

July 2024 – April 2025

As a structural working member on the Galt Carnegie Library retrofit, I’ve contributed to adapting this 1902 heritage building into a mixed-use space that combines affordable housing with areas for social engagement. The project supports low-income students and individuals, and is located near key resources, transit, and the UWaterloo Architecture campus.

We’ve partnered with MTE Consultants and their restoration team to ensure our design respects the building’s heritage while meeting modern needs. Structurally, my focus has been on reinforcing the attic to support new occupancy loads and improving lateral stability through shear wall upgrades, using local materials and the existing framework.

The design integrates passive strategies and energy-efficient systems—including solar panels, LED lighting, a VRF heat pump, and a DOAS with CO₂ sensors—to support net-zero energy goals. Despite heritage restrictions, we’ve implemented innovative solutions to enhance performance while preserving the building’s character. The result is a thoughtful blend of historical preservation and sustainable housing.
